Archaeological Site of Agios Georgios at Pegeia

Welcome to the Agios Georgios Pegeia Archaeological Site in Paphos, a highly-ranked place for Pilgrimage in the region!

You’re in for a treat as the site boasts of significant discoveries during the excavation that started in the 1950s.

The excavations there unearthed Early Christian Basilicas and a bathhouse from the 6th century.

In contrast, later excavations revealed an extensive unwalled settlement that occupied the cape’s neck and the south slope in the Roman and early Christian periods.

What is remarkable about this spot is that It flourished under the rule of Justinian I from 527 to 565 AD.

Historians believe it was likely a thriving port of call for ships transporting grain from Egypt to Constantinople because of its advantageous position.

There is also a graveyard at the cliff’s brow with tombs carved into the rock, which is perfect for an Indiana Jones fan like me!

The Agios Georgios church of Pilgrimage is located between the site of the basilicas and the cemetery.

It’s the perfect place to take fantastic photos and enjoy the fresh sea breeze.

But wait, there is more! A small chapel was founded in the late 13th – early 14th century.

This is a fantastic opportunity to understand the history and heritage of the area while enjoying some fresh air and sunshine in the Cypriot outdoors.

How to get there?

Board the 615 bus from Paphos to Coral Bay. Don’t be fooled by bus stops that read 616 – they’ll take you on a wild goose chase. Instead, stick with the 615 until it reaches the final stop in Coral Bay.

You’ll link up there with the 616 minibus that’ll transport you straight to the church. I recommend arriving 5 minutes early since these buses don’t mess around. And make sure to check the timetable beforehand, as there’s a two-hour break around lunch.

With these tips in mind, you’ll have no problem unearthing the secrets of Agios Georgios Pegeia Archaeological Site. Happy exploring!
